Documentary photography studio

Frames that still feel like the day they came from

Unhurried coverage of vows, sittings and quiet editorial work — shot in available light, delivered in full, and catalogued so you can find any moment years later.

  • Available light
  • Two-camera coverage
  • Full edited set
Field note

Field note

I photograph the hour, not the pose

A handful of directed frames, then I step back and let the room do the rest.

Most of what people keep from a wedding or a sitting was never arranged: the pause before a speech, a grandparent reaching for a hand, the walk back to the car. I work close, quietly, and in whatever light the day gives me, which means no banks of flash and no twenty-minute group-shot queue.

Every commission starts with a short call about the shape of the day — where the light falls, who matters, what you would rather I skipped. Then I shoot it as it happens, cull hard, and hand back a full edited set rather than a highlight reel designed to sell you an upgrade.

Three chapters

The work, and what each commission actually covers

Read the coverage and delivery detail before you write — it is the fastest way to know whether we are a fit.

Chapter 01

Vows & full-day coverage

From the quiet of the morning through to the first hour of dancing.

I arrive while things are still calm, photograph preparations in whatever room you are in, and stay through the ceremony, the meal and the start of the evening. Group shots are kept to a short list agreed in advance so you spend the afternoon with your guests instead of on a lawn.

Chapter 02

Portrait sittings

An hour, one location, and a set of pictures that look like the person in them.

Sittings run on weekday afternoons for the warmer light. We walk, talk and shoot in the same motion — no studio, no posing charts. Bring a second outfit if you want range; bring a dog, an instrument or a toddler if that is closer to the truth of you.

Chapter 03

Editorial & maker stories

For florists, chefs, venues and small studios who need pictures with usage rights attached.

A half-day on site covering process, hands, detail and the finished thing, shot to brief but not to a shot list so tight that nothing honest survives. Files come colour-matched for print and web, with a licence written for the places you actually publish.

How a commission runs

Four steps, no surprises in the middle

The same sequence whether you are booking a full wedding day or a single sitting.

01

First note

Send a date and a rough idea of the day. I reply within two working days with availability and a written fee — nothing is held until you ask me to hold it.

02

Date held

A signed agreement and a deposit hold the date. The balance is due a fortnight beforehand, and you can move the date once without a fee.

03

Run-through

Two weeks out we talk through timings, light, access and the short list of people you want photographed together. I share a simple one-page plan.

04

Shoot & deliver

Cards are backed up twice before I leave. Previews land first, then the full edited set in a catalogued gallery with high-resolution downloads.

What's included

The specification, written plainly

Everything below is part of every commission. Albums and extra hours are the only add-ons.

Edited files
The complete edited set at full resolution, plus web-sized copies. No per-image unlocking and no watermarks.
Gallery
A private online gallery, catalogued by part of the day, that stays live for twenty-four months and can be shared with family.
Printing rights
Personal print and share rights for life. Commercial licences are written per project for editorial work.
Backups
Dual card recording in camera, two copies on the day, and an archive kept for three years after delivery.
Travel
Included within a half-day drive. Beyond that, travel and a night's lodging are quoted up front, never added later.
Weather & delay plan
An indoor alternative agreed at the run-through, and a standby colleague I have worked with for years in case I cannot reach you.
Albums
Optional. Linen-bound, hand-sequenced from the delivered set, with one round of changes before it goes to print.

Recent frames

A short sequence from this season

Three pictures that show how the light is handled rather than how the day was staged.

Sitting in a borrowed hallway
Portrait of a person standing outdoors in a white shirt with a blurred background of trees

Questions

What people ask before they book

If yours is not here, put it in the note at the bottom of the page.

How many hours do I actually need?
For a one-venue wedding, nine hours usually covers late preparations through to the first dances. If your ceremony and reception are in different places, or you want the morning from the beginning, plan for eleven and we will map it at the run-through. Extra hours can be added on the day at the hourly rate rather than booked defensively in advance.
Do you work alone or bring a second photographer?
I shoot alone for sittings and editorial work. For weddings of more than eighty guests, or where preparations happen in two places at once, I bring a second photographer I have worked with for years. You will know who it is before the day, and their frames are edited to match mine.
What happens if it rains all day?
We agree an indoor alternative at the run-through, usually a window, a doorway or a covered walkway. Rain tends to produce better pictures than flat sunshine — the group gathers closer, umbrellas give you shape, and the light goes soft. Nothing in the plan depends on good weather.
Can we ask for a shot list?
A short one, yes — the family groupings you genuinely want, plus anything with a story attached, like a borrowed dress or a hand-made cake. I would rather not work from a long list of staged set pieces, because the time spent arranging them is time taken from the day itself.
When do we see the pictures, and in what form?
Previews arrive within five days for weddings and three for sittings. The full edited set follows in the timescale listed for each chapter above, in a private gallery sorted by part of the day, with full-resolution downloads and web copies for sharing.
How do we hold a date, and what if plans change?
A signed agreement and a deposit hold it; until then the date stays open to anyone who asks. You can move to another available date once at no cost. If the new date is already taken I will help you find a photographer whose work I would stand behind.

Tell me the day you have in mind

A date and two lines about the day is enough to start.

I read every enquiry myself and reply within two working days with availability and a written fee. If I am already booked, I will say so plainly in the first reply rather than leaving you waiting.
